The Presence of Absence’, The Mind’s Eye, Electro Studios Project Space, West St Leonards. (2023)

The first of the triptych series of ‘The Presence of Absence’ was originally made by photographing the reflection of the outside seascape of Pevensey Bay onto the inside painting by my late partner Peter Waldron in an attempt to express the loss of his presence.

The second of the tryptich series, was  made by photographing the reflection of the outside of the gallery onto the first image, a palimpsest.

The third image was made in my home in Hastings reflecting the outside from the street beyond onto the palimpsest of the first two images. The use of the shadows, reflections and the blurring of the familiar gave me the sense of the home being no longer a place of comfort but of isolation and incarceration. ‘In my minds eye’ I now see them as having a poetic sense of the presence of absence.
